The Method

Six weighted dimensions. Verified fields only — every number on this site names its source. Quality and speed are anchored to a public third-party leaderboard, not our own taste. No sponsored placements. The best AI image generators of 2026 are ranked by Image Bench's annual evaluation of text-to-image products and models, scored across output quality, cost per 1,000 images, text rendering, commercial safety, free-tier generosity, and generation speed.

Dimensions

dimensionweightmeasures / recomputation rule
quality_elo30%Artificial Analysis Image Arena Quality Elo, min-max normalised to 0-100. Source URL and capture date are published with every score.
cost_per_1k_images20%Artificial Analysis price per 1,000 generations, tiered: ≤$10 → 100 · ≤$30 → 80 · ≤$60 → 60 · >$60 → 40
text_rendering15%100 if ≥2 independent public reviews name the tool for text inside images, else 50
commercial_safety15%100 if a public commercial-use / IP-indemnity commitment is documented, else 50
free_tier_generosity10%100 − 30·(hard cap on free tier) − 40·(images public by default) − 20·(payment card required)
generation_speed10%Artificial Analysis median generation time (3-day rolling), inverse-normalised

Scoring formula

Each dimension is normalised to 0-100, then combined:

score = 0.30·quality + 0.20·cost + 0.15·text + 0.15·safety + 0.10·free + 0.10·speed # recompute any score on this site

Terminology

Model ≠ app ≠ provider. A model (Nano Banana Pro, GPT Image 2, FLUX) is the system that draws. An app (ChatGPT, Gemini, Midjourney) is the product you buy and prompt. A provider exposes models through an API. This run ranks consumer products; the model layer is explained on our models-vs-apps page and the provider layer on our API providers page.

Two price calibers, always shown. Surveys disagree on what "the price" means: one reports the cheapest plan that produces usable output (entry tier), another reports the headline paid tier. Where our sources disagree — Adobe Firefly is $9.99/mo entry tier on Zapier's figures and "from $10/mo" on CNET's — we print both and never pick one.

Copyright. The copyright status of AI-generated output is governed by each platform's own terms, which differ. We report those terms as recorded and publish no unified legal conclusion.

Data coverage

Published orderings reflect verified fields only. For the 2026 run the verified set covers: price tiers (Zapier's October 2026 survey, and the PCMag image picks), CNET review scores, the built-in editing tools and privacy-policy fields from the same CNET comparison, PCMag category winners, and free-tier terms. The Artificial Analysis fields — Image Arena Elo, price per 1,000 images, median generation time — carry 60% of total weight and are still being captured; until that pass completes, index scores publish as pending and the ordering is provisional. Untested dimensions — for example photorealism beyond a source's recorded verdict — are never estimated.
